Garden pond diversity: Opportunities for urban freshwater conservation

نویسندگان

چکیده

Urbanisation is increasing globally, degrading terrestrial and freshwater habitats reducing faunal floral richness. Whilst the potential for garden ponds to serve as important biodiversity resources in urban areas has been documented a limited number of studies, quantifying contribution diversity largely neglected. This study aims quantify taxonomic richness, community composition conservation value aquatic macroinvertebrates domestic non-urban ponds. Taxonomic richness was significantly lower than at an alpha gamma scale. A greater Odonata, Coleoptera, Gastropoda Hemiptera were recorded Garden found support compositionally different macroinvertebrate communities compared ponds, influenced by variation water depth conductivity. total 23 taxa from only. Non-urban had higher (87% low or moderate value, while only 35% these categories). Although currently have they contribute regional species pool their limit future loss significant. Given high abundance popularity within landscape, clear guidance required pond-owners on how best manage sustain biodiversity. For this be achieved, research increase fundamental understanding pond ecology, development evidence led management practices.

Challenges for freshwater invertebrate conservation

Freshwater invertebrate conservation faces 5 important challenges. First, ;10,000 species of freshwater invertebrates around the world may already be extinct or imperiled. Second, human pressures on freshwater resources are intense and will increase in the coming decades, putting yet more species at risk. Third, scientific knowledge about freshwater invertebrates, although substantial and usefu...

Challenges and opportunities in implementing managed relocation for conservation of freshwater species.

The rapidity of climate change is predicted to exceed the ability of many species to adapt or to disperse to more climatically favorable surroundings. Conservation of these species may require managed relocation (also called assisted migration or assisted colonization) of individuals to locations where the probability of their future persistence may be higher. The history of non-native species ...

Threats and opportunities for freshwater conservation under future land use change scenarios in the United States.

Freshwater ecosystems provide vital resources for humans and support high levels of biodiversity, yet are severely threatened throughout the world. The expansion of human land uses, such as urban and crop cover, typically degrades water quality and reduces freshwater biodiversity, thereby jeopardizing both biodiversity and ecosystem services. Identifying and mitigating future threats to freshwa...

Defining conservation priorities for freshwater fishes according to taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity

To date, the predominant use of systematic conservation planning has been to evaluate and conserve areas of high terrestrial biodiversity. Although studies in freshwater ecosystems have received recent attention, research has rarely considered the potential tradeoffs between protecting different dimensions of biodiversity and the ecological processes that maintain diversity. We provide the firs...

A method for spatial freshwater conservation prioritization

1. Freshwater ecosystems are amongst the most threatened and poorly protected globally. They continue to be degraded through habitat loss, pollution and invading species and conservation measures are urgently needed to halt declining trends in their biodiversity and integrity. 2. During the past decade a suite of decision support tools and computational approaches have been developed for effici...
